Kallari Hand Carved Wooden Bowls

s

A large cedar tree had previouly been felled, split in half, and two wooden boats were being carved out.
The palm leaves on the ends of the boat are placed there to slow the drying and cracking of the end grain.

a

Wooden bowls are made from the buttress roots of harvested trees.  These butresses are less likely to split as they dry due to the extra tough wood grain.  The second wood boat is seen being roughed out in the background

s

The usable part of the buttress is sawn out

s

Another cut trims the bottom of the bowl

s

A hundred year old community owned hand adz is used to shape the outside of the bowl

s

Now the inside is roughed out

s

The bowl is now carried back to the house for finishing later with the same hand adz

s

Several days later the finished bowl is presented after many hours of carving

The bowl was so beautiful, I ordered a dozen more...   Please visit our store!
